Off to see Pedro!

I am leaving tonight for my annual volunteer trip in Brazil. If you are new to this blog, you can read the entry I posted last year to explain what this is and why I go.

One of the best parts of the trip will be seeing my godson Pedro, who celebrated his first birthday in February. Last year, I got to be there for his baptism, and I wrote this entry to explain my friendship with Pedro's father Sergio.

In March, my friend Carey went to Rio and the surrounding beaches for spring break. Her trip fell in the midst of my packing to move to New York. I was cleaning out my condo and allowing myself to keep only the bare essentials. Sitting on the bed in my spare bedroom was Ted, my childhood teddy bear.

I decided it was time for Ted to have a new home.
Carey took him to Rio for me, and I almost cried when I saw the pictures of Pedro cuddling with his new prize. It's fun to hold on to sentimental possessions that remind us of our past. But isn't it even more fun to see them being put to good use today?

My god-nephew is so cute! You failed to mention the bear's full name which I do believe was Theodore Edward Bear, thus Ted E. Bear.

Of all the things you gave away to make a new start in NY -- including your car! -- I think this bear found the best home of all.

What precious pictures of Pedro and Theodore E. Bear! I am late in learning that very few things need to be kept on a shelf, in a drawer, or stored in a closet, basement or garage. Nothing on a shelf does much good unless it adds beauty and makes you smile. Everything else, including those clothes you will one day fit into, will be better off being used by someone - today. Before my last move, I was ruthless in pitching or passing on all but one small closet of boxed memories that belong to my children (mostly photos)...and a few toys for when grandchildren come to visit. Amazing how freeing it was! Kudos to you for "traveling light" as you journey through life, and may the blessings you give to others, bounce back to you and give you peace, joy, and hope. With hands free from "stuff" of life, you can receive so much more. Can't wait to hear about your trip.
