Dear Mom,
I wish we had thought to take a photo of the artwork in your room before we started taking things down. It was so cool and so you! That home was YOURS in a way that I don’t think Dad’s house ever was, because he was so attached to the way things had been when he grew up. (Plus you had to worry so much about what your mother-in-law would think or say when you changed things or moved things out there. Frankly, I still cannot believe y’all had the guts to knock down that wall between the dining room and master bedroom so that the master bedroom finally fit the size of the house. What did Mimi say?! Maybe someone remembers and will tell me.)
Here's the photo from that first night in the new house, post-demolition:
Anyway, I brought one special piece of your art back with me, and I put it out immediately. Just like the painting says, I will find my way back to you eventually:
Notice also the "Para Volver La Tortilla" plate you got in Spain and had in the den on top of the TV cabinet. (That means "To Turn The Tortilla" for y'all who don't get it. A typical Spanish tortilla is more like an omelet or a fritatta, with potatoes and onions.) I almost gave that plate to Babs, but instead she got the Plaza Mayor print from your room (in honor of the semester when I vitisted her in Spain and she visited me in Madrid).
*** Quick Flashback! *****
Here's the table and mirror with some new photos (more to come) and the candle snuffer that you had by your chair. It's one of my favorite things because it reminds me of acolyte days at Centenary. Ranie got the other one from the mantle. Leigh Ann and I were both touched she wanted it. (And you would have loved that...not the obvious answer at all!)
That area was already an homage to you, as I used your "rule" about hanging a mirror somewhere that it will reflect something pretty (it catches some of the window and exterior light). I knew I'd done well when Kathleen singled it out for praise on her first visit after I moved in!
I am pleased as punch that the flame-stitch pillows you did in the late 70s or early 80s are now back in style and perfectly complement both my rug and big painting. What a "Cheryl Thing"! I had looked at some Jonathan Adler ones that were similar and $$$$.
I spent the evening easing my transition from the Big Q back to NYC by hanging with Ouiser, Ma'lynn, Truvy, Annelle, Shelby and Clairee. "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion!"
The following quotes were shared on Facebook:
"Time marches on, and pretty soon you realize it's marchin across your face." (Say Ray)
"If you don't have anything nice to say..." (Ranie)
"...Come sit by me!" (Say Ray)
"I'd rather have 30 minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special." (Kelli)
"He don't know whether to scratch his watch or wind his butt!" (Becca...on Mr. Bo's account!)
"I assure you that my personal tragedy will not interfere with my ability to do good hair!" (LSS)
"Thanks, Ouiser. Nothin' like a good piece of ass." (Melissa)
"Your signature colors are blush and bashful." (Adam)
"All gay men have track lighting. And all gay men are named Rick, Mark or Steve." (Neil)
And...the A answer from Hilary, who took a line and gave it her own Quincy spin:
"Well, I can repoooort that a Jaguar was seen departing the Centenary Methodist parking lot. And I can repoooort that attendees were sitting on the staircases..."
Saudade,
Lynerd
